MEETING OF THE BOARD

Neepawa United Church

March 17, 2020

 

Present: John Lea, Bob Durston, Brian Bailey, Linda Hart, Judy Elgert, Pat Fedoruk, Susan Phillips, Jan Bailey, Jane Goudie, Ella Jarvis

 

1. Call to order – Jane called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

 

2. Opening Meditation John Lea shared a prayer from the Moderator re: COVID-19

 

3. Adoption of the Agenda – Susan moved adoption of the agenda, seconded by Bob. Carried

4. Adoption of the Minutes – Bob moved adoption of the Feb. 18, 2020 minutes, seconded by Ella. Carried

 

5. Correspondence

The United Church of Canada Emergency Plan was received. Jane will review and give a summary at our

next meeting.

 

6. Committee Reports: All reports except the Treasurer’s Report were deferred until the next Board Meeting.

 

Treasurer’s Report – Bob Durston reported

-Bob distributed the statement to Feb. 29, 2020.

Income $26,283.25

Expenses $21,168.30

Surplus $ 5,114.95

Moved by Bob, seconded by Judy that the Treasurer’s Report be adopted. Carried

 

7. Old Business

RCMP records check and Church Covenant – deferred to the next meeting

 

8. New Business

New computer and Accessible Employment Standard Regulation – deferred to the next meeting

 

9. Urgent Business

 

A). Worship Committee

A motion was made and passed to close the Neepawa United Church for all functions except the office, starting March 21 until further notice. The sign outside the Church will be changed. Dawn will be asked to notify all pertinent groups/individuals who have booked the Church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has already cancelled their services.

As a result of the closure, the Gently Used Sale, the Spring Supper, the Lenten Service, Holy Week Music at noon and the Good Friday Service will be cancelled.

A motion was made and passed to arrange for taped services to be shown on NACTV starting March 29 until further notice. Bernie Mullens volunteered for March 29. Jane will talk to Ruth Hanke and Dawn. If Dwayne Petch cannot tape, Brain Elgert is an alternate. A suggestion was made to mention at these services that donations to the Church can be dropped off at the Church Office.

 

 

9B) Ministry and Personnel

Brian reported for the Search Committee. The Neepawa United Church has received permission from the Pastoral Relations Commission of Prairie to Pine Regional Council to proceed with the steps toward the establishment of an ecumenical shared ministry with St. James Anglican Church as a way of meeting ministry needs.

A motion was made and passed to withdraw the posting of the current ministry position at Neepawa United Church from the Church Hub. Murray Hart or Dawn will be asked to do this.

 

A committee is required that, with the direction/guidance of representatives from the Regional Council Committee on Community of Faith Support, will develop an Ecumenical Shared Ministry Agreement (ESM). Heather Lea and Lynn Sanderson will be the representatives working with the committee.

 

Two motions were made and passed to establish members on the Search Committee and the ESM Committee.

 

C) Other Motions

- Primer and paint are left over from the painting of the CEC. A motion was made and passed to hire Doug to paint the CEC basement.

- A motion was made and passed to accept 2 new members.

- A motion was made and passed to donate $500 to NACTV for 2020.

 

10. Moment of Levity – Brian Bailey shared a moment of levity.

11. Next scheduled Board Meeting is April 21, 2020 at 7 pm.

12. John Lea shared thoughts on if we are doing enough to help.

13. Jane adjourned the meeting at 8:30 pm.

 

Motions

 

#1 Motion made by Brian Bailey and seconded by Bob Durston. That the Neepawa United Church be closed for all functions, except the office, as of March 21 until further notice. Carried.

#2 Motion made by Susan Phillips and seconded by Judy Elgert. That we arrange for taped services, if possible, to be shown on NACTV from March 29 until further notice. Carried.

 

#3 Motion made by Brian Bailey and seconded by Pat Fedoruk. That the Neepawa United Church withdraw the advertisement for a minister from the Church Hub. Carried.

 

#4 Motion made by Brian Bailey and seconded by Jan Bailey. That the following church members be invited to serve on the Ecumenical Shared Ministry Committee: Dave Cochrane, Murray Hart, Bob Durston and Lynda Lowry. Carried.

 

#5 Motion made by Brian Bailey and seconded by Ella Jarvis. That the Neepawa United Church Search Committee consist of Brian Bailey, Dave Dyck, Jane Goudie and Jean Jackson. Carried.

 

#6 Motion made by Bob Durston and seconded by Pat Fedoruk. That Doug be authorized to paint the CEC basement with supplies on hand. Carried.

 

#7 Motion made by Pat Fedoruk and seconded by Susan Phillips. That, on the recommendation of the Worship Committee, the Neepawa United Church Board accept Donald Walmsley and Michele Walmsley for membership in our Church, by Reaffirmation of Faith. Carried.

 

#8 Motion made by Bob Durston and seconded by Brian Bailey. That the Neepawa United Church donate $500 to NACTV for 2020. Carried.
