MEETING OF THE BOARD

Neepawa United Church

November 21, 2017

 

Present: Bert Lowry, Kristin Woodburke, Linda Hart, Bob Durston, Brian Bailey, Ella Jarvis, Donna Newton, Colleen Taylor, Brian Elgert, Judy Elgert

 

1. Call to order – Bert called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

2. Kristin led us in a discussion on fears and hopes we have for our Church, followed by an opening prayer.

3. Changes to the Agenda: 7a) Pastoral Oversight Review was done at last meeting; omit and replace with Time and Talent Auction. Add 8e) Spring supper. Add 7d) Same Sex Marriage Policy at our Church

Adoption of the Agenda – Brian Bailey moved adoption of the amended agenda, 2nd by Donna. Carried

4. Adoption of the minutes – Ella moved adoption of October 17, 2017 minutes, 2nd by Donna. Carried

5. Correspondence - none

6. Committee Reports:

A) Pastoral Care – Colleen reported the following cards had been sent out:

Sept: 5 sympathy, 4 get well, 1 best wishes, and 2 anniversary of death

Oct: 1 sympathy, 3 get well and 3 anniversary of death

Nov: 3 sympathy and 3 get well

B) Mission & Service - no report

C) Ministry & Personnel – no report

D) Treasurer – Bob commented that the maintenance costs for 2017 are the lowest they have been for

many years. Bob included a preliminary budget for 2018. He clarified that the Memorial Fund can be used for the sanctuary and the Building Fund for major repairs and expenses to the Church. The Brody Intern fund has $5,400 available to support an intern. The Larger Parish Committee will be discussing at their next meeting the feasibility of having an intern. Bob ‘s report shows info to October 31, 2017

Surplus $ 2,935.70

Moved by Bob, 2nd by Judy. That the Treasurer’s Report be adopted. Carried

E) Property – no report

F) UCW – Donna reported that the UCW held a successful fall supper and made approximately $5,300. Attendance was around 440, down slightly from last year. The Fall Rummage Sale took in $1,555.20. The Anniversary Celebration in Gladstone was enjoyed by those attending. Christmas Events include the UCW General Christmas Party on Dec. 6 at 2 pm and packing and delivering Goody Trays on Dec. 13. The USW Nominating Committee is at work.

G) Ministerial

 

6H) Trustees – are meeting this week.

I) Worship Committee –Judy reported

J) Stewardship

The Board decided to send out a second stewardship letter. Bert will draft a letter and send it to Kristin. The letter will be sent out next Tuesday. Kristin has incorporated a stewardship theme into the services this past month.

K) Presbytery

Kristin reported that the Presbytery met this past Saturday.

L) Special Reports – none

M) Acceptance of all reports was moved by Brian Elgert, 2nd by Brian Bailey. Carried

 

7. Old Business:

A) Time and Talent – Donna reported:

C) Christmas Services

Dec 24 services are at 11 am and 7 pm

 

D) Same Sex Marriage

There is no policy on this at the present time. Each marriage request presented is approved or denied by the Board. Further discussion at a future Board Meeting.

 

8. New Business

A) Rental Spaces on Social Media

 

8B) Just Kitchen Rental Use

After discussion and information from Donna, the Board agreed that the kitchen only in the CEC could not be rented.

 

C) AA Meetings

AA is no longer having meetings on Thursday evenings at the CEC. Kristin will ask Dawn to put up a sign on the CEC door for the next few Thursdays stating that AA is no longer meeting at the CEC. Some AA members are attending meetings in Branson.

 

D) Caretaker Fee for South Meeting Room

It was decided that the fee would be $30.

 

E) Spring Supper

Table discussion to a future meeting.

 

9. Ella provided a moment of levity.

10. Next meeting is Sunday December 10 after Church at 12:15 pm
